But wait, can you hear that?!
It’s the dreadful sound of old habits knocking at the door! Argh…
It sounds like the rumbling in your stomach after 9 p.m. tempting you to eat that late-night snack.
It’s the voice in your head that’s telling you it’s okay to hit the snooze button one or two times and skip your morning yoga class.
Essentially, it’s the sound of the old you trying to keep you stuck. This sound can be so loud sometimes that you just can’t tune it out.
“Making powerful changes in your life is easy!”
Said no one…EVER!
I’ve come to realize that anytime we make a decision to step into a new version of ourselves, there is bound to be adversity.
This adversity will show up in the form of resistance, fear, and anxiety. You might even find yourself making excuses like “I don’t know where to start,” “This feels hard,” or “I just don’t have time for this.”
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not here to put you down or dissuade you in any form.
The truth is our brains are wired to keep us safe and because unfamiliar territory can mean danger, It’s a natural reaction to want to resist change. However, it’s important to realize that those uncomfortable places are where you will find the most growth. It’s where you will be forced to adapt and evolve.
Because I believe in you and I know you have what it takes, I’m giving you the top 3 secrets to living an Ayurvedic lifestyle! I’ll even share a bonus secret at the end!
If you’ve gotten this far, that means you’re committed to making powerful changes that will elevate your mind, body, and spirit so let’s dive in!
Secret #1: Knowledge is Power
Okay, I know it’s a cheesy cliche, but cliches wouldn’t exist if they weren’t true. The number one thing that holds someone back from making change is a lack of education around the change they are looking to make.
Ayurveda can seem quite intimidating at first, but learning even a little bit about how it works can go a very long way.
There are many ways you can get the information you need to start living an Ayurvedic lifestyle. In fact, this blog is an awesome place to start! FYI… I also have lots of other resources that range from my free Facebook group to pulse reading consultations and private health coaching.
There are also some great books out there on Ayurveda. Some of my favorites include “The Yoga of Herbs” by Dr. David Frawley and Dr. Vasant Lad, “Ayurveda: A Life of Balance by Bri. Maya Tiwari, and my first Ayurvedic “textbook” – which is what became my personal Ayurvedic “bible,” “The Ayurvedic Cookbook” by Amadea Morningstar.
if you’re vegan, interested in plant-based Ayurveda, or just looking to decrease your meat consumption with some awesome Ayurvedic home recipes, check out my Ayurvedic Vegan Kitchen Cookbook. Or if you want to take the quick and easy route, just type Ayurveda into your google search engine, You’ll find tons of resources to guide you on your way.
What’s most important is that you understand the elements that make up your body and the qualities they all represent. This will help you to understand the nature of your symptoms so that you can find the proper remedy to bring you back into balance.
Once you’re familiar with all of the great things an Ayurvedic lifestyle can do for you, you’ll feel even more inspired!
Ayurveda empowers you to choose the path you want to take towards healing, and you get to choose the way you learn about it as well.
Secret #2: You Don’t Have to Do it Alone
Let’s face it, creating new habits can be hard, especially in the middle of winter. It’s easy to get so amped up by the energy of change a new year can bring, that burn out can happen fast.
In 2014, The University of Scranton did a study that showed that when it comes to new year resolutions, many people set them, but only 8% of those people actually keep them.
While I’m sure there are many reasons for this, I have a feeling that many of those people didn’t have someone to keep hold them accountable. It helps to have someone(s) to share your journey with.
When you have a person in your life who can give you a good pep talk when you need it or just a space to talk about your challenges, it makes a huge difference.
Side note… Winter is the time of year to plant seeds for what you want (silently and internally) – it’s spring that’s the time to put all those dreams into action!
You may have heard this before, but you are the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Because of that, you want to make sure that you have the best people on your team. These are the ones who are willing to help you, hold space or inspire you as you go along.
Maybe you choose to start living an Ayurvedic lifestyle with the whole family. Or maybe you set up a support group.
You can teach your friends about Ayurveda by cooking them a meal and encouraging them to eat it with you. Or ask them to try detoxing with you this spring.
Find people in the places where you spend your time or work. A yoga class would even be a great place to connect with other like-minded individuals who are interested in improving their health and wellness.
Whatever you do, just know, you don’t have to do it alone!
Secret #3: Take it Slow and Don’t Give up
This last step is crucial and It’s the one that’s going to allow you to take a million more!
You’re going to get the most sustainable results when you break your journey down into bite-sized pieces.
That fear, anxiety, and resistance I mentioned early typically only shows up when we try to take on too much too fast.
If you want to create change that has a lasting effect, then the best way to do it is to take on one thing at a time, stay consistent, and never give up.
You may not see results in a week or even in a month. In fact, it typically takes about 3 to 5 months to see any real change when implementing diet or lifestyle changes.
And I’d go so far to say that it takes YEARS to really make Ayurveda an integrated part of your life – one that has the power to support your long-term health and vitality like nothing else I’ve ever found.
Here’s an action step you can take right now… Sit down and make a plan about how you will move forward.
Be honest with yourself about how much you can take on at one time. Try a few things like waking up with the sun or tongue scraping for a few weeks and from there add something else to the list. If you need help with this, read my article on the 6 easy ways to incorporate Ayurveda into your everyday life.
